It is a seriously hard to match; trekking through some of the largest Gurung and Magar communities in Nepal, enjoying the natural beauty of the Annapurna region with rhododendron forests and witnessing the view of shimmering peaks from one of the best view points in Nepal.

We definitely recommend two seasons as the best periods for the trek; spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November). The crystal clear skies combined with pleasant weather and generally good vibes all around offer an amazing experience that is hard to replicate elsewhere.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise View Trek Overview

This stimulating trek makes your journey interesting and exciting with the best views of Annapurna, neighboring Himalayas and the presence of rice terraces, pleasant forests and tranquil lakes.

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise View Trek is a combo package that is seriously hard to match; trekking through some of the largest Gurung and Magar communities in Nepal, enjoying the natural beauty of the Annapurna region with rhododendron forests and witnessing the view of shimmering peaks from one of the best view points in Nepal. The trek for Poon Hill, a photographer’s paradise, begins with sightseeing of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. Then, you can take a flight to Pokhara from where you can make the real walking for Poon Hill through the beautiful Gurung village of Ghandruk and enjoy the ethnic hospitality as well as the cultural magnificence of Gurung Museum. You can get thrilling experiences while trekking through the bloomed with red flowers of rhododendron forests in the springs, descending to Birethanti, passing by waterfalls and a few small villages. Mountain Layers Treks and Expedition Pvt. Ltd. is proud to organize this Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise view Trek.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Difficulty

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular treks in Nepal and one of the reasons for this is its short and easy nature. The trek only involves around 4 – 5 hours of trekking per day and even that is through fairly easy and well-trodden routes. The highest point of the trek is at Poon Hill (3,210m), meaning there is virtually no risk of altitude sickness either. Overall, this is just an easy grade trek that can be performed by people of all age groups and experience levels, including children and elderly.

Best Season for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the treks in Nepal where choosing the correct time to visit can make a noticeable difference. We definitely recommend two seasons as the best periods for the trek; spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November). The crystal clear skies combined with pleasant weather and generally good vibes all around offer an amazing experience that is hard to replicate elsewhere.

Winter trekking (December – January) is a good time to witness the panorama of glistening peaks from Poon Hill. The increased snowfall of winter further accentuates the amazing mountain vistas on this trek. Monsoon trekking is possible but not recommended as the unpredictable weather and rainfall can make the experience somewhat mediocre compared to other seasons.

Itinerary

Day 1 : In the morning drive to Kathmandu - Pokhara (840m), 202km. by tourist bus 7hrs or by flight 35minutes over night at hotel in Pokhara

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek begins today after we pick you up from your hotel or designated meeting point. The flight is the luxury option as you get to enjoy the bird’s eye views of Nepal and the Himalayas from the comfort of the airplane. Moreover, you will arrive at Pokhara in just half an hour and have the rest of the day in leisure. However, budget constraints can be an issue. So our standard option is the drive via Prithvi Highway on a suitable vehicle; tourist bus or jeep depending on group size. This is also the better way to get firsthand experience of the Nepali terrain and landscape before you begin the actual trekking. We will explore the lakeside and chill in the evening.

FAQs

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise View Trek is a short and scenic trek in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It takes trekkers through picturesque villages, rhododendron forests, and to the vantage point of Poon Hill, renowned for its stunning sunrise views over the Himalayas.

The trek typically takes around 4 to 5 days to complete, depending on the itinerary chosen. This includes trekking from Nayapul to Ghorepani, ascending Poon Hill for sunrise, and returning to Nayapul or continuing to other destinations in the region.

Poon Hill, the highlight of the trek, stands at an altitude of 3,210 meters (10,531 feet). It offers panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, including iconic peaks like Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).

The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is considered relatively moderate in difficulty and is suitable for trekkers of all experience levels, including beginners. The trail involves uphill and downhill sections, but the pace is generally manageable, allowing for acclimatization.

The best time to do the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer clear skies, favorable weather conditions, and blooming rhododendron forests, enhancing the trekking experience.

Trekkers need to obtain the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekker's Information Management System (TIMS) card before starting the trek. These permits can be obtained through registered trekking agencies in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Accommodation along the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek route primarily consists of teahouses or guesthouses. These lodges offer basic facilities such as dormitory-style rooms with shared bathrooms. Private rooms may be available at some teahouses for an additional cost.

Weather conditions can vary, and while sunrise views from Poon Hill are generally spectacular, they may be obstructed by clouds on some days. However, clear skies are common during the spring and autumn seasons, increasing the likelihood of witnessing a stunning sunrise.

Essential items to pack include trekking boots, comfortable clothing, a warm jacket, rain gear, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a camera, and personal toiletries. It's also advisable to carry a reusable water bottle, snacks, and a basic first-aid kit.

ATM facilities and currency exchange services are limited along the trekking route. It's recommended to carry enough Nepali rupees in cash to cover expenses during the trek. Major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara have better banking facilities for currency exchange and ATM withdrawals.

Additional Information

01. Fitness Level: While the trek is considered moderate, it involves walking for several hours each day with uphill and downhill sections. Trekkers should have a reasonable level of fitness and be prepared for the physical demands of trekking at high altitudes.

02. Altitude Sickness: While Poon Hill itself is not at a very high altitude, some trekkers may experience symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches, nausea, or fatigue. It's essential to stay hydrated, ascend gradually, and listen to your body to prevent and manage altitude-related issues.

03. Guided vs. Independent Trekking: Trekkers have the option to trek independently or with a guide/porter. While independent trekking offers flexibility, hiring a guide provides local expertise, navigation assistance, and support in case of emergencies. It's a personal choice based on experience and preference.

04. Packing Essentials: In addition to basic trekking gear, it's advisable to pack a headlamp or flashlight for early morning hikes to Poon Hill, extra layers for chilly mornings, and insect repellent for evenings in the lower elevations.

05. Photography Tips: Poon Hill offers stunning sunrise views, making it a paradise for photographers. To capture the best shots, arrive early to secure a good vantage point, use a tripod for stability in low light conditions, and experiment with different camera settings to capture the beauty of the Himalayan landscape.

06. Local Culture: Throughout the trek, trekkers have the opportunity to interact with locals from Gurung and Magar communities. Learning a few basic Nepali phrases and respecting local customs and traditions can enhance the cultural experience and foster positive interactions with the villagers.

07. Environmental Conservation: The Annapurna Conservation Area is a protected region, and trekkers are encouraged to practice responsible tourism by minimizing waste, avoiding single-use plastics, and respecting wildlife and natural habitats.

08. Post-Trek Relaxation: After completing the trek, consider spending a day or two in Pokhara to relax and unwind. Pokhara offers various activities such as boating on Phewa Lake, exploring the International Mountain Museum, or indulging in a massage or spa treatment to rejuvenate tired muscles.

By considering these additional factors, trekkers can better prepare for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise View Trek and make the most of their adventure in the Annapurna region of Nepal.
